Despite what you might think, "The Princess Bride" is not a fairy tale. It's a modern retelling of the story of "Cinderella," but it's also a coming-of-age story of sorts, something of a fable about the power of belief. The true hero in this story is said to be Westley, the handsome swashbuckler who gallantly rescues the beautiful Buttercup from her wicked stepmother and stepsisters. But of course, that's not how it's always seen.
In "The Princess Bride," Buttercup often gets called into question on that point, because she doesn't seem too sure of herself when Westley comes to rescue her. She has some doubts about him, he knows it, and he has some doubts about himself as well, so they butt heads while they fight their way through the story together. But when they finally meet face to face on the other side of all these years, they’re still convinced of each other’s worthiness…and true love can come out of all kinds of unhappiness.
